Amazon Sophos – AI-Powered Financial Data Assistant

Overview

Sophos is an AI-powered chatbot that helps Amazon Finance teams get answers from data by asking questions in plain English. It removes the need to write SQL or rely on technical teams, saving time and speeding up decisions.

The Problem

Finance teams spent hours waiting for reports from BI engineers. This caused:

  • Slow decision-making

  • Limited ability to explore data

  • Time lost (2–4 hours per user each week)

Goals

  • Make data access fast and easy

  • Let users ask questions in natural language

  • Build trust with accurate answers

  • Cut down reliance on technical teams

My Role

I led the UX design and product vision for Sophos 2.0, focusing on:

  • Discovery & Research: Conducted user interviews with Finance teams to understand workflows, pain points, and mental models for data analysis

  • Product Vision: Defined the conversational experience strategy to ensure trust, accuracy, and clarity in AI outputs

  • Experience Design:

    • Designed end-to-end conversational flow for querying and interpreting financial data

    • Incorporated error handling, model explainability, and confidence indicators to build trust

  • Prototyping & Testing: Built interactive prototypes and ran usability tests to optimize for ease of use and reduce cognitive load

Impact

  • 2–4 hours saved daily per user during Beta

  • Increased independence for Finance teams, reducing reliance on BI Engineers

  • Accelerated response times for leadership inquiries from days to hours
